G-force (relative centrifugal force) measures how many times the force of gravity is applied to the material being separated. Higher G-force means faster and more complete separation. In IPP's inventory, G-forces range from 541 on basket centrifuges to 1,900 on decanter centrifuges. Disc bowl centrifuges typically generate the highest G-forces for fine particle and liquid-liquid separation. Decanters generate moderate G-forces for slurry dewatering. Basket centrifuges generate lower G-forces but excel at filtration with cake washing.

In centrifugal sedimentation (disc bowl and decanter centrifuges), phases separate based on density differences alone, without a filter medium. The denser phase migrates to the bowl wall while the lighter phase is displaced inward. In centrifugal filtration (basket and inverting filter centrifuges), the slurry is fed into a basket with a perforated wall or filter cloth. Centrifugal force drives the liquid through the filter medium, retaining the solid cake on the basket wall. Sedimentation is suited for clarification and liquid-liquid separation. Filtration is suited for solids dewatering and cake washing.

Batch centrifuges (basket and inverting filter types) process a fixed volume per cycle and are suited for applications requiring cake washing, multiple product grades, or smaller batch volumes.
