What is the difference between air cooled and water cooled chillers?

Air cooled chillers reject heat directly to the atmosphere through finned-tube condensers and condenser fans, making them suitable for facilities without cooling water availability. Water cooled chillers reject heat to a separate cooling water loop, typically through a cooling tower, and generally achieve higher efficiency and larger capacities. In IPP's inventory, water cooled chillers reach 3,000 refrigeration tons (10,550 kW), while air cooled chillers reach 113 refrigeration tons (397 kW).

What refrigerants are used in IPP's chiller inventory?

Refrigerants across IPP's chiller inventory include R-22, R-134a, R-410a, R-404a, R-123, and NH3 (ammonia). Older units may use HCFC refrigerants such as R-22; HFC refrigerants such as R-134a and R-410a are common in more recent units; ammonia is used in industrial refrigeration applications. Note that R-22 has been phased out of new equipment production globally and may require refrigerant replacement or retrofit for long-term operation.
